Biography

With his art, the Spanish gitano and artist Manolo Gómez Romero has found an adequate visual expression for flamenco and thus expanded this culture with a new facet of abstract art. The winner of the Premio de la Cultura Gitana 2012 succeeds in congenially translating the enigmatic duende state of flamenco into painting.

The works of the self-taught Manolo Gómez, although mostly formally abstract, are an expression of his own way of depicting his attitude to life and his surroundings. Sometimes, says the artist, they show what it means to be a Gitano. They are an attempt to depict the ancient emotions of the culture of the Spanish Gitanos in a contemporary way through vibrations, abstract expression and by means of dynamic colour throws, for example the inexplicable state of duende between audience and artists at flamenco. Gómez's work has therefore rightly been compared to the quejío, the special song of the cante flamenco, reminiscent of a scream.
